FMT) – Dr Mahathir Mohamad, chairman of PPBM, said his party will consider any application by PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali to join his party.
Mahathir said this after Azmin, who is rumoured to be Mahathir’s preferred successor over PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, showed up at a prayer session in conjunction with PPBM’s third anniversary on Thursday.
Asked if Azmin could join PPBM, Mahathir said no application to join the party had been made by Azmin.
“If an application is made, we will consider it,” Mahathir told reporters.
Mahathir added that Azmin, as well as many other “prominent leaders”, were invited to attend the PPBM anniversary prayers, including PKR vice-president Xavier Jayakumar, who had also attended the event.
Azmin has been absent from a series of party meetings, leading to talk of a split in PKR between those aligned with party leader Anwar and Azmin.
There has also been talk of friction between Anwar and Mahathir over when the prime minister will hand over power to Anwar as promised in a deal by Pakatan Harapan leaders.
Azmin recently thanked PAS and Umno for showing support for Mahathir to remain as prime minister until the end of the five-year term.
